James is a general practice attorney focusing in the areas of DUI/DWI, criminal defense, divorce/family law and personal injury. He established his own firm in July 2010, having previously worked as an Associate Attorney at deVries & Associates, P.C. for three years. While at deVries & Associates, James handled all of the firm’s criminal and municipal defense work as well as several administrative and civil matters. From 2005-2007, he served as an Assistant Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney in the Drug Unit. As an assistant prosecutor, James handled and tried numerous felony and misdemeanor drug and alcohol cases. His responsibilities also included numerous traffic, probation, and civil dockets, including representing the Missouri Department of Revenue in administrative cases where an individual had allegedly refused to take a breathalyzer test.
James received his Juris Doctorate from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, and his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He is licensed to practice law in the State of Missouri and is a member of the Missouri Bar Association (MoBar), Eastern Jackson County Bar Association (EJCBA) and Missouri Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (MACDL). From 2009 through 2010, James chaired and co-chaired the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association (KCMBA) Municipal Court Committee and served as the president of the Criminal Law Section. In 2011, James proudly served on the Board of Directors for both the KCMBA and MACDL and is currently serving on the nominating committee for the Jackson County Ethics, Human Relations and Citizen Complaints Commission as well as the Jackson County Drug Commission (COMBAT).
Ms. Waits was born and raised in the Kansas City Metro area attending Truman High School. Ms. Waits earned her Bachelor ‘s degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2002. Prior to attending college, Ms. Waits began working in the legal field in 1998, where she was exposed to both criminal law and family law issues. Based upon this experience, Ms. Waits pursued her Certified Paralegal Certificate from Johnson County Community College, while continuing to work in the legal field focusing primarily on family law.
Ms. Waits then moved to Charleston, South Carolina to pursue her legal degree at the Charleston School of Law. In doing so, Ms. Waits enjoyed the distinction of graduating in the top 10% of her class, earning magna cum laude honors. During her tenure in law school, Ms. Waits was a member of the Charleston Law Review, Charleston School of Law Presidential Scholars Program and the Dr. Raymond S. Greenberg Presidential Scholars program through the Medical University of South Carolina.
Ms. Waits has dedicated her practice to Family Law and represents clients in the dissolution of marriages (divorce), modification of custody and child support actions, contempt actions, establishment of child support actions, adoption matters, paternity actions, and guardianship proceedings.

Jessica Foxx was born and raised in Independence, Missouri. She attended William Chrisman High School where she was active in Varsity tennis and other organizations. After high school, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Central Missouri with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. Jessica then attended the University of Missouri – Kansas City where she graduated with honors and an emphasis in Family Law.
Prior to joining Waits & Witteman, LLC, Jessica was law clerk to the Honorable Jack R. Grate with the Jackson County Circuit Court. During law school, she interned with the Jackson County Circuit Court and the Department of Homeland Security. Jessica was active in the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law’s Child and Family Services Clinic, where she represented clients in Family Law matters. She served as President of the Family Law Society, Secretary of the Animal Law Society, and as a staff member for the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Law Journal. She is a published author in the Journal of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and the UMKC Law Review. Prior to law school, she worked for seven years as an estate planning and probate paralegal at Stewart, Cook, Constance & Minton, LLC.
Jessica is licensed to practice law in Missouri and is a certified Guardian ad Litem. Her practice is dedicated to Family Law, Probate, and Estate Planning.
